Our cats’ itty bitty size, adorable toe beans, and perpetual cleaning habits are some of the things that make them just oh-so-cute. It’s also these factors, though, that can put them in harm’s way, however well-meaning their cat parent. When keeping a home clean, we use the products we’ve always used: the ones that work best or smell the nicest, perhaps. These aren’t always the best options when it comes to our pets’ health, though. Cats, in particular, are very small and low to the ground. This means that they are breathing in whatever may have been used on a given surface. The fumes are still present long after the product itself has been used. They also breathe quicker than we do, and have small systems, so toxins move quickly, with not a lot are needed to have an adverse effect. Finally, their cleanliness means they are licking at their paws and fur frequently, ingesting any dirt or chemicals that they’ve walked through or brushed up against. Before you panic about what’s in your cleaning cupboard, though, never fear! I’ve compiled a bunch of cat-friendly cleaning products that will keep your home clean, green and safe!
There are a whole range of pet-safe cleaning products out there to cover every part of your home! And so many of them are gentle on the earth in terms of ingredients, and how they break down. There is always the highly effective (and cheap!) baking soda and vinegar route, for those who are happy to make their own. For others, read on!
Traditionally an area of all sorts of chemical products, you can keep your bathroom sparkling clean with products from Puracy. Their all purpose cleaner works on all bathroom surfaces, including glass, steel, chrome, granite and marble. Puracy’s award-winning products are made to be as effective as possible, while remaining safe for use in homes with pets and newborns. They’re completely cruelty-free and vegan too.
Often overlooked as a concern for cat, some laundry detergents can cause irritation to cats’ skin. Also, cats can suck on fabric or lick fur after lying on it, ingesting chemicals that remain. This laundry detergent from Common Good will leave your laundry cotton fresh, and your cat healthy as can be! Its gentle scent has won it rave reviews with customers, while the company put pet-safety foremost among its considerations. It has the Leaping Bunny certification, just like Puracy.
A word of caution when it comes to laundry, most dryer sheets are also toxic if chewed on by a curious pet. Many pet parents use dryer sheets to help pick up cat hair off clothes and furniture, so there is a double hazard here. These sheets from Better Life are safe for use around pets and kids, and are totally biodegradable, to boot!
Another laundry addition that won’t cause harm to either clothes or animals is this odor remover from Biokleen that can be thrown in with the wash. It’ll get rid of any persistent odors from clothing or bedding while being anti-bacterial as well. And with that one-two-three combo, your laundry will have never smelt better!
Glass cleaners usually stay on the surface they’re sprayed on, after being wiped around a bit. And a lot of glass is in reach of cats, or on coffee tables a cat might walk on (especially if it’s somewhere they’re ‘not allowed’!) so it’s easy for the cleaners to be picked up by the toe beans en route. PawSafe make a glass cleaner that is, like in the name, safe for any paws that might encounter it. And for any tongues that may then encounter those paws...
For general floors, the all-purpose cleaner from Eco-me is a good’un (see ‘Kitchen’ below). For keeping wooden floors and furnishings shiny and protected, though, this wood polish from Eco-me is a great option. Non-toxic and plant-based, its ingredients are safe for use around any pet-occupied home. This company’s range of accreditations is impressive too, being vegan, BPA-free and cruelty-free just to begin with! You can also go for a steam mop, using no product at all, to help you shift grime and stains. Simply the power of hot water and steam!
As promised, this all purpose cleaner from Eco-me can be used all over your kitchen. It works on floors, walls and all other surfaces. The ingredients are all natural, containing the famous vinegar of legend that is renowned for its cleaning power! The clean, fresh scent is courtesy of essential oils rather than perfumes. While it’s true that cats shouldn’t be ingesting oils, the traces left through cleaning won’t cause any harm to your furbaby. This can even be used outside for surfaces and stain removal.
To add to the cabinet, you can try this biodegradable cleaner from Dr Bronner’s (who make the top selling natural soap in US marketplace). It even works on the grime on stove tops while being safe for use with your dishes.
The holy grail of cleaning products for pet owners is that which cleans carpets. Between the fur that is shed on the daily, and the hairballs, and the… other emissions that find their way onto this most porous and absorbent of materials, a good go-to carpet cleaner is essential. This carpet and upholstery shampoo from Puracy is made to be pet safe while removing stains, soil and odor from carpets and other fabrics. Their site claims it removes ‘funk, and other junk’ and I, for one, am sold!
For a spot cleaner and odor remover, you should also give the Angry Orange, which bravely claims itself to be the ‘World’s Best Pet Deodorizer’. With a tagline like that, how can you resist? It’s versatile enough to be used indoors and out, though it must be said that the orange scent is also somewhat legendary itself! According to its reviews, lets just say you definitely won’t be smelling the soiling anymore… in a good way, I promise!
Thinking about cat-safe cleaning products is one of those moments where you are like ‘oh, of course!’ and can’t believe you hadn’t taken it into consideration before. If you want to shop beyond the products I’ve suggested for you here, then do a bit of research before applying your purchasing power. The steps you need to take are as simple as checking each company’s FAQs or mission statements online. Finding ingredient lists for the all-natural products is usually easy, in contrast to some of the synthetic products… funny, that. Almost as though the natural and plant-based companies are proud of their products! In today’s world, it’s super easy to go for items that will keep your precious kitty safe, while looking after all other creatures too. That’s why the products I’ve listed here are non-toxic, while all largely made from natural ingredients and biodegradable. So no matter how much cleaning you want to do of your house, or your cat wants to do of itself, you can be chill and happy in the knowledge that you’re both well taken care of. Now that’s a happy home!
